51 million people ignored baseball to watch the final debate Tuesday night.
With a current U.S. population of 294 million, that means almost 1/5 of us watched the final presidential debate. That’s impressive, since our traditional voter turnout for a presidential race is not much more than twice the percentage of people who watched this last debate. Assuming there’s some correlation between debate watchers and voters, I’m impressed that almost half of America’s voters watched the debate. This is good news for Kerry and for the future of civic engagement in America. I didn’t realize that I was so skeptical beforehand.
